# Departments and teams

> Departments, teams, broadcast channels, and reporting structure.

## How departments and teams fit together

**Departments** are the top-level units in your organisation (venues, sites, or functions). **Teams sit inside departments** and hold the people each manager is responsible for.

Example:

* Department: Falmer Bar
* Teams: Team Aksa, Team Tyler
* Each team roster lists the CSAs (or other staff) that manager looks after

Department membership (who belongs to the department for rota, channels, and broadcasts) is separate from team rosters. Someone can sit in the department without being on every team.

## Reporting managers and team rosters

Each team can have a **reporting manager** (team lead). Keep reporting lines up to date in **All members** or the **org chart**, then add people under **People on this team** in the department **Teams** panel.

## Where to manage departments and teams

| Area | Path |
| ------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Departments & teams | Admin → Departments & teams (`/admin/departments`) |

Open a department row to manage its teams, members, broadcast settings, and managers in the side panel. Managers with the right access use **Manager → Departments & teams** (`/manager/departments`).

Older **Admin → Teams** and **Manager → Teams** links redirect to the same hub.

## Creating a department

1. Go to **Admin → Departments & teams** (`/admin/departments`).
2. Click **New department**.
3. Enter the name, optional description, and colour.
4. Open the department to assign managers, add teams, and build rosters.

New departments are created as standard units. Older society or club labels from legacy data may still appear as a small badge on those rows.

## Creating a team under a department

1. Go to **Admin → Departments & teams** (`/admin/departments`).
2. Open the department (for example Falmer Bar).
3. Open the **Teams** tab in the side panel.
4. Add a team (for example Team Aksa) and optionally set a reporting manager.
5. Add people to that team's roster.

Team leads can rename their team and edit the roster. Org admins can delete teams.

## Broadcast channels

Every department has at least one broadcast channel. When a manager or admin sends a broadcast, they target a channel or team. Staff subscribe to channels from their profile settings.

## Scheduling and timezones

Rota and calendar scheduling use the **organisation timezone** set in org settings. Teams do not have their own timezones.

## Editing and archiving

Open a department from **Admin → Departments & teams** to edit name, managers, channels, members, and teams. Archive departments that are no longer active to hide them from day-to-day views while keeping history.
